Sheffield Road (West side) : 'Rock Cells' (1)

Image

Once located at the rear of the old Horsfield's (pawnbrokers) shops (No 57) were cells carved into a rock outcrop and reached through a sturdy stone frontage and door, presumably once used to lock up and detain offenders. Note, also, the stone paving in the small enclosed and virtually hidden courtyard.
