Sheffield Road (West side) : Hall's & Platt's (and George Hotel)

Image

This soot-blackened tall building still had 'Half Price Shop' emblazoned on its upper frontage, harking back to the early years of the twentieth century. Number 85, the lower part was occupied as a bakery by E. Hall from 1957-64; the upper part was where Fred Platts had his watch and clock business, from 1952-61. The George Hotel functioned from this site from 1977 to 1911, the last of four inns once here : the Sailor Prince, Ship Inn and Hussar Inn – wonderful but curious names in Victorian Barnsley!
