Shambles Street : Tomlin's

Image

One of the earliest images from the Tasker Collection, this photograph from the late 19th century shows A.R.Tomlin's chemist's shop. On this key site overlooking Townend, Tomlin was in business from 1890 to 1905, succeeded by A. Wright, also a chemist, who had a very long tenure, until 1977. Tomlin appears to have allowed Butterfield's to mark their presence, directing customers in the direction of Church Street, a clever piece of advertising. The slightly blurred figures figures outside the shop also indicates early use of the camera, the photographer perched with his large-frame device on a window ledge in the tall building opposite the road. The result is a spendid image of late Victorian Barnsley.
