Shambles Street : (South side) : Blenkinsop's butchers

Image

Even small shops once had numerous sales assistants and delivery boys in the early 1900s. The employees and owner of Blenkinsop's pock butchers at number 6 (a prime location), pose for the cameraman, arms folded. Maybe Edgar Blenkinsop is the rotund gentleman displaying his waistcoat under his white serving jacket (and flat cap). Blenkinsop was here from 1880 to 1912. Notice the Cheshire cheese sign painted above the building. Cheeses were brough over to Barnsley from Cheshire exchanges and sold to wholesalers and retailers by cheese factors.
