Shambles Street : (North side) : Pinfold Steps
This carefully composed postcard image from about 1905 show Pinfold Steps, ascending towards Pinfold Hill, overlooking the ancient medieval routeway into Barnsley then known as Westgate. The pinfold was a pound or enclosure used by the pinder to retain any stray animals, usually cattle and sheep bound for market. The two boys in the photograph add interest to the scene. The central area of the steps was divided by a wooden hand rail placed on sturdy but attractive metal upright posts. This was an important part of old Barnsley, still remembered by some people.
