Shambles Street (South side) : Lord Nelson Hotel (3)
The Lord Nelson became the largest hotel on the street after its creation in the 1830s, demolished almost 150 years later, in 1976. The hotel building stretched for an impressive 9 bays at 1st and 2nd floor levels, its accommodation facilities considerable. Shops, such as the Barnsley Heating Centre, occupied part of the ground floor in the 1960s and 1970s. The hotel's name was a popular choice for owners of pubs and inns, in tribute to Britain's famous fighting hero Admiral Lord Nelson. Also see images 1313 and 1314. A new brick-built public house known as The Shambles replaced the old hotel in 1982 but reverted to the Lord Nelson name in 2002 (from O'Neil's Bar).
