Shambles Street : From Townend

Image

Looking up Shambles Street, from Townend, this lovely, well-composed photograph dates from about 1960. A tradesman guides his horse and cart up the hill, a reminder of what many travellers had to do for many generations earlier, as this was always a fairly steep ascent into the market place and town of Barnsley. Pinfold Hill and the old Methodist chapel dominate the horizon or at least the upper townscape at this time. In the 60s the use of large advertising posters on hoardings did little to enhance the appearance of Barnsley. What also makes the image have 'atmosphere' are the ladies and toddler and perhaps their other youngster lagging behind, distracted by something of interest.
