Shambles Street : (North side) : Fenton House

Image

The building on the right, looking rather grand with its tall windows, central entrance and decorative round windows to its top floor was Fenton House, located on a small lane off the main street (Fenton Street). The name Fenton is from a local family resident from the eighteenth century. Fenton Street was also known as Taylor Hill and also Factory Hill. The chimney is typical of the Lowry-like urban landscape of Barnsley due to its prominent position as a linen and textile manufacturing centre.
