Image

The Halifax Building Society (2-4) dominated the corner and start of the the south side of Shambles Street from Market Hill. Its tall impressive facade was in use by the Halifax from about 1967, on a site once used by the old town Corn Exchange. After a gap the building numbered 6, Harral's Stores was a long-established pawnbrokers, here from 1912. It's Art Deco frontagewiondows were also notable though lost in later usages. Part of The White House (Harrals Furniture Store) is just in shot, on the site of the Old Globe Inn. This image dates from 1960.
