Shambles Street : Royal celebration?

Image

The narrow entrance and nature of the street is well illustrated in this image, properties decked with flags and bunting in celebration of either a royal occasion or maybe a Boer War victory. The street surface consisting of large stone sets can also be appreciated. It was always a crowded place on market days at this point especially. Mr Blenkinsop the butcher appears to have taken a great deal of effort with his displays; and notice the large Cheshire Cheese sign above his shop. Cheese factors from Barnsley would travel over the Pennines via well known routes to obtain cheese for the shops in Barnsley and elsewhere.
