Shambles Street : (South side) : Red House

Image

Red House, occupying a prime south-facing plot and not far from the Market Place was the town residence of John Wilson. Constructed of fine red brick (hence its name) with ashlar facing, it was a rather grand building, its garden stretching to and bounding the Sough Dyke. Wilson was one of Barnsley's pioneer linen merchants and like several others lived in an elegant property befitting his status.
