Eldon Street (N.side) : The Harvey Institute ('The Civic').

Image

This Edwardian image of Eldon Street is dominated by one of Barnsley's proudest public buildings: The Harvey Insitute, built in 1876 (late known as The Civic Hall, renovated and restored in the 2000s). Bayford's (drapers) occupied nos 38 to 42 from 1894 to 1938. The shop immediately before the Insitute was Denton's (the well known photographers) who appear to have had a presence in Barnsley from about 1860. But what makes this image so splendid are the children gathered around the public horse trough. Notice also the tram lines, clearly visible on the road surface. See Tasker's 'Barnsley Streets', vol.4, pp.82-85.
