Gas Nook : west side shops

Image

An eclectic range of shops were located on the the west side of the Gas Nook. In view here are Howe's Tripe, Market Fisheries and Army Stores. A 'dustman' with his handcart walks along, keeping the wide pavement tidy. Above eye-level the buildings display Edwardian architectural features, with large mullioned windows and projecting dormers. The street got its name from the nearby gasworks and associated offices. All disappeared due to the redevelopments of 1969.
