Gas Nook (east side) and Wire Trellis Inn (May Day Green)

Image

The Gas Nook was a short but interesting part of old Barnsley town centre, off Pontefract Road and close to May Day Green. On the east side stood a range of key social and commercial buildings, including the Wire Trellis Inn (May Day Green). This old and substantial pub was subsequently modernised and given a new frontage, stocking ales from the Clarkson Brewery. The latter's elephant sign was a distinctive logo at the front of the building in its latter years. This pub closed in 1968, it's last host being Barry Harvey. E.G. Tasker was able to trace previous licensees from the early 1800s: see p.56 of Barnsley Streets (vo. L4). The pasted advertising sheets seen to the left of the Inn and above the barber's shop helps to date this image to about 1890/1905. The stylish gas lamp is an interesting feature. The street was lost during the late 1960s redevelopment of the town centre.
