Market Hill : N.side: No 10, Holden

Image

A Victorian engraving can often provide detail that is not so obvious in a later photograph, this example providing us with an excellent view of the corner of the north side of Market Hill and its curved frontage towards Church Street. J. Holden was a very well known hatter and general outfitter, or tailor. He was here from the early 1880s until the the end of the Great War. Notice the date '1876' under the clock. This was where the fashionable men and women of Barnsley and district purchased their Sunday best.
