Market Hill (procession down) c.1890

Image

An interesting early view looking up Market Hill when a procession was descending the hill in abput 1890. Nottingham House was the name of the large building on the lower east corner, occupied by the hatter John Aspinall, established in 1863 and the bootmaker James Schofield. Hatters or milliners and boot and shoemakers were key retail outlets in thriving industrail towns such as Barnsley;. This site was used for the Yorkshire Penny Bank in 1903. and Schofield a bootmaker. Above it is the Kings Head Hotel, an old hostelry/coaching inn that became famous for the 'invention' of the Barnsley Chop.
