Church Street: Commerce Buildings

Image

Commerce Buildings had a distinctive portico consisting of four classical columns supporting a large pediment. Railed to its lower part, the building for many years (1837-70) was the town post office but was earlier used as the Mechanics Institute and site of Kings Arms Hotel. A series of banks were in occupation from the 1870s through to the 1990s and onwards to modern times. The portico remains can be seen relocated in Locke Park. See Tasker's 'Barnsley Streets': vol 1: pp 16-17.
