Church Street: (view 9): telegraph boy

Image

A telegraph boy smiles at the photographer in this early c.1900 image, dressed in his official uniform and carrying a bag of messages. Behind him a smartly-dressed man in a bowler also poses failry casually towards the camera. This upper part of the street included a row of old stone cottages, seen here on the left, dating from c.1800. The original sash windows with two by six panes are clearly visible. Also see E.G.Tasker's 'Barnsley Streets': vol 1 pp54-55.
